Campbell Kind Wine, Rosso Veronese, Italy
In April of 1995 I arrived in the village of Negrar in the heart of Valpolicella Classico. This was my first trip to Italy to attend the Vinitaly wine fair.
Fratelli Speri was an important supplier to Lifford and I was about to meet them for the first time.
The family patriarch, Carlo Speri, grabbed my hand and shook it for a long time while fixing his sparkling blue eyes on mine and for the first time, welcomed me into his family.
I have been in their warm embrace ever since.
Since 1864 generation after generation of the Speri family has made hand crafted Valpolicella and Amarone in the steep valleys of northern Italy.
Families that farm for generations have a special connection to their land. It is sacred and needs preservation not only for their children but for their grandchildren’s children.
After many years of work in the vineyards, in 2015 Speri received their organic certification and thus became the first producers of organic Valpolicella and Amarone.
Luca, Carlo’s son, now shakes my hand and fixes me with his blue eyes.
I asked Luca to make a wine for my Campbell Kind Wine project and he suggested we make a Rosso Veronese from his organically grown young vines and I just had to say yes.
