Campbell Kind Wine Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand
In 2003 I was invited to attend the grand opening of Craggy Range Winery in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
Never having been to “the land of the long white cloud”, I jumped at the chance. This was the beginning of my love affair with New Zealand.
Steve Smith, MW was one of the hosts, a partner in the company and the genius who selected some of the best vineyard sites in New Zealand for Craggy Range.
We visited those vineyards with Steve and it was obvious that the future of the winery was bright under his guidance.
For many years we worked together and with every year our mutual respect grew.
Fast forward to January 2017 when Steve picked me up at the Napier Airport and the two of retreated to his beach house.
After Craggy Range Steve studied business at Stanford, started his own winery and became a university chancellor.
I had been working on my Carbon Neutral wine project for a very long time and was struggling with what to call it.
Steve told straight out “if you want any one to take these wines seriously you have to put your own name on the label”.
On that fateful day Campbell Kind Wines was born and I have Steve Smith to thank for that.
Steve also offered to make my first wine, a Sauvignon Blanc from the heartland of Marlborough. This is in fact the very first Campbell Kind Wine to be released in Canada.
